Unlocking Potential: A Deep Dive into the Dairy Value Chain in Yemen

Are you making an impact?

The dairy sector is a crucial component of Yemen’s agricultural landscape, providing a vital source of income and nutrition. At IMPACT Consulting, we are dedicated to fostering social, economic, and environmental development through rigorous research and strategic advisory. Our recent study on the small ruminant dairy value chain offers a comprehensive look at the current state of the sector, identifying key challenges and opportunities for growth.

Our Research Methodology

To provide cutting-edge insights, IMPACT Consulting employs a mixed-method research approach that combines both qualitative and quantitative data collection. Our process is structured to ensure a thorough and accurate analysis:

  1. Desk Review: We began with a review of existing data, including project documents, impact assessments, and published agricultural statistics from sources like the OCHA and IPC Info.
  2. Research Preparation: Our team developed and validated data collection tools and selected a sample from four key governorates: Taiz, Lahj, Aden, and Abyan. We held an inception meeting with our client to approve the methodology and framework.
  3. Field Research: The core of our study involved on-the-ground data collection, including:
    • Key Informant Interviews: With key stakeholders in the value chain.
    • Focus Group Discussions (FGDs): Separated for men and women to ensure diverse perspectives.
    • Surveys: To gather quantitative data from a broad sample.
  4. Report Compilation & Dissemination: We are currently analyzing the data to write a comprehensive report, which will include a detailed GIS analysis of the targeted districts.

Current Highlights & Key Findings

Our research has uncovered several critical aspects of the dairy value chain in Yemen:

Key Challenges

  • Volatile Market: The sector faces significant financial and market volatility due to high feed/fuel costs, weak purchasing power, and currency fluctuations.
  • Infrastructure Gaps: There is a lack of proper infrastructure, including rough transportation routes, frequent power outages, and limited access to refrigeration and pasteurization, which leads to spoilage.
  • Production & Health Constraints: Farmers face low milk yields, recurrent animal diseases, and inconsistent access to veterinary services and medicines.
  • Weak Linkages: Most agreements are informal or oral, and producer associations are not well-resourced or effective.

Key Opportunities

  • Market Expansion: There is significant potential to expand the market by developing a Yemeni dairy brand, standardizing packaging, and using media to drive demand both domestically and in neighboring countries.
  • Formal Linkages: Simple purchase contracts and strengthening producer groups into cooperatives could improve quality control and bargaining power.
  • Financing & Assets: Tailored financial products from Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) could support investments in livestock, solar cooling, and processing equipment.
  • Improved Productivity: Addressing the challenges through better feed and genetics, veterinary campaigns, and cold chain technology can significantly improve productivity and product quality.

Our Vision for the Future

Our study will culminate in a final report, providing actionable recommendations to strengthen the dairy value chain in Yemen. We aim to contribute to a more resilient and sustainable dairy sector that supports the livelihoods of thousands of Yemenis. The final report is expected to be submitted in February 2026.
